OverviewSalina is a town of roughly 34,000 residents in central Onondaga County, directly north of Syracuse. The town is bordered to the north by Clay and Cicero, to the east by Manlius, to the south by Syracuse and Dewitt and to the west by Onondaga Lake (and beyond that, Geddes). The name of the town of Salina derives from the Latin word for “salt,” and the salt-mining industry has been big here for a long time. The town is a northwest suburb of Syracuse and includes the village of Liverpool and the hamlets of Galeville, Lyncourt, Mattydale, and a portion of North Syracuse. Part of the massive DestinyUSA shopping and entertainment complex is in Salina. The Erie Canal runs through Salina; the middle section of the canal, from Salina to Utica, was the first to open, in 1820. Salina’s location on the canal stimulated its industrial development. Liverpool is a lakeside village that once was a bustling canal port. Onondaga Lake Park, with seven miles of shoreline nooks and crannies and a popular sport for picnics, is in Liverpool. Part of the Syracuse Hancock International Airport is in the northeast part of Salina.
Local Museums & Landmarks
The Salt Museum tells the story of the salt industry that created Syracuse. The museum, which also has a gift shop, is in Liverpool. The Liverpool Museum and historian’s office are in the Gleason Mansion on Second Street. The smaller Liverpool Willow Museum is on the lawn of the Liverpool Museum and commemorates the Liverpool willow-weaving industry. The Alvord House in Salina is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as is the Gleason Mansion in Liverpool. The village also is home to Sainte Marie among the Iroquois, a “living history” museum on the shores of Onondaga Lake. |
