Welcome to Jordan, NY

Overview

Elbridge is a small town (population just under 6,000 residents) on the western edge of Onondaga County, bordered to the north by Lysander and Van Buren, to the east by Van Buren and Camillus, to the south by Skaneateles and to the west by Cayuga County. The town has two villages, Elbridge and Jordan, and a few hamlets. The Erie Canal/Seneca River system defines part of the north border of the town. Jordan became a major transportation center after one of the earliest sections of the Erie Canal was constructed through the village in the early 1800s.

Essentials

For grocery shopping, Elbridge has a Tops Friendly Markets store on East Main Street. The village also has a Byrne Dairy store, a hardware store, a Dollar General, and Kinney Drugs, among others. The closest Wegmans supermarket is in Auburn in neighboring Cayuga County, about 10 miles southwest of Elbridge; another Wegmans on West Genesee Street in Syracuse is about 14 miles east. For major retail shopping, Walmart stores can be found in Camillus (10 miles east), in Auburn, and in Liverpool (21 miles northeast). Auburn also has one of the area’s only Bass Pro Shops, along with Home Depot, Lowe’s, BJ’s Wholesale Club and Walgreens.

Fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities are popular here; Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery is at the south end of town, and the Seneca River (part of the Erie Canal system here) is at the north end. Skaneateles Lake is a quick drive south. Auburn is a good-sized city with museums, historic sites, the Auburn Movie Plex, the Reva Rollerdrome (for roller skating), a paintball center, two bowling centers (Falcon and Starlite Lanes), and the Auburn Doublesdays, a professional baseball team that plays a short season in the summer.

The New York State Thruway crosses the north part of town. Route 317 heads north-south through Elbridge. Route 5 heads east-west in the south part of Elbridge, and Route 31 does the same in the northern end.

Pros & Cons

Small-town living is the norm here. The town’s two villages have several shopping and dining options. Tessy Plastics is a major employer in the area. Nearby Auburn has a lot to see and do.
