Overview

Clay is a town on the northern edge of Onondaga County, bordered to the north by Oswego County, to the east by Cicero, to the south by Salina (and the village of Liverpool), and to the west by Lysander. With nearly 60,000 residents, Clay is the largest town in Onondaga County, an affluent community that has a large retail strip along Route 31, including the Great Northern Mall. The village of North Syracuse is mostly within the town of Clay.


Essentials

Clay is one of the major retail hubs in the county, with its centerpiece the Great Northern Mall. At the mall, you’ll find not only dozens of stores and eateries, but also a Regal Theaters movie multiplex. The mall has major retailers like Sears and Macy’s. For grocery shopping, Clay has a Tops Friendly Markets store on Oswego Road and a Wegmans supermarket near the mall on Route 31. Another Wegmans is in Liverpool, about 4 miles southwest.



Recreation & Entertainment

The Great Northern Mall has a bevy of attractions, including nightclubs and restaurants and a movie multiplex. Flamingo Bowl, a bowling center, is in Liverpool. Onondaga Lake is only about 7 miles south and popular with boaters and fishermen and –women and other outdoor lovers. Onondaga Lake Park is a county park with 7 miles of shoreline.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 31 is the major east-west highway and well-traveled, as it is lined with retail shopping and the like. Route 481 heads north-south and intersects Route 31 west of Euclid, in the northern part of town.



Pros & Cons

You’ll find a lot in Clay, the largest town in Onondaga County. Clay has the Great Northern Mall for shopping, dining and entertainment choices; Route 31 is a major retail strip from Liverpool to Clay to Cicero. Onondaga Lake is to the south, and the Oneida and Seneca rivers flow into the Oswego River here. The town of Clay has several new housing tracts, and the town is still growing. Syracuse is a quick drive south.
