OverviewClay is a town on the northern edge of Onondaga County, bordered to the north by Oswego County, to the east by Cicero, to the south by Salina (and the village of Liverpool), and to the west by Lysander. With nearly 60,000 residents, Clay is the largest town in Onondaga County, an affluent community that has a large retail strip along Route 31, including the Great Northern Mall. The village of North Syracuse is mostly within the town of Clay. The Oneida River marks the north town line and the Seneca River marks the west town line. The rivers join into the Oswego River near the community of Three Rivers, and the Erie Canal follows the rivers around the border of Clay.
Local Museums & Landmarks
Clay has several historic sites, including the Old Log Cabin (the oldest building in Clay) and the Hiawatha Lodge, both on Henry Clay Boulevard; Immanuel Lutheran Church (the oldest in Clay) on Ver Plank Road; the Sacred Indian Grounds on Oak Orchard Road; the Onondaga Nation Indian Territory on Route 57; and the British Camp-Three Rivers Bridge, also on Route 57. The Salt Museum, celebrating the area’s salt mining industry, is in nearby Liverpool. Sainte Marie among the Iroquois is a “living history museum,” also in Liverpool.
