Welcome to Van Buren, NY

Overview

Van Buren is a town in northwest Onondaga County, bordered to the north, west and partially east by Lysander, to the rest of the east by Geddes, and to the south by Camillus and Elbridge. The town is named after Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States, who was governor of New York when the town was created. Part of the town is suburban in character, while the rest is rural. Van Buren includes nine hamlets and the south part of the village of Baldwinsville.

Essentials

Most shopping needs can be met in the village of Baldwinsville or in nearby towns. For grocery shopping, there’s a Tops Friendly Markets store in Baldwinsville. The closest Wegmans supermarkets are in Liverpool. For major retail shopping, the Great Northern Mall in Clay (about 11 miles east) has all kinds of stores, restaurants and other options. Route 31 in Liverpool has a Walmart store and a Target store, both about 11 miles southeast of Van Buren.

Recreation & Entertainment

This is a region of lakes, streams, rivers, swamps, marshes and creeks. With all that water, of course, there are plenty of opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing and similar types of outdoor entertainment. The Anheuser-Busch Amphitheater on Paper Mill Island in Baldwinsville holds concerts, festivals and other events during the warm-weather months.

Transportation & Traffic

Getting around is pretty easy. The New York State Thruway (a toll road, heading east-west) crosses the south part of town, and Interstate 690 (north-south) intersects the Thruway in the east part of Van Buren. Route 173 is an east-west highway in the south part of town, and Route 48 follows the course of the Seneca River in the eastern part of town. Onondaga Lake, popular with boaters, is a short drive east. Hancock International Airport, which serves the Syracuse region, is about 17 miles east.

Pros & Cons

You can live a suburban or rural lifestyle in Van Buren. The village of Baldwinsville has a number of attractions, and others are just minutes away in neighboring towns. Proximity to Onondaga Lake is a plus, as is the number of major highways.
