Welcome to Skaneateles, NY

Overview

Skaneateles is a scenic town on the western edge of Onondaga County that surrounds a good portion of Skaneateles Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. The town is bordered to the north by Elbridge, to the east by Marcellus, to the south by Spafford and by Cayuga County (town of Niles), and to the west by Cayuga County (towns of Sennett and Owasco). The town and its appeal are built around the lovely lake of the same name, said to be the cleanest of the Finger Lakes. The city of Syracuse spends millions annually protecting the water quality.

Essentials

Skaneateles has a number of places to shop, but most are smaller stores and boutiques. The city of Auburn in Cayuga County is only 7 miles west and has a wider variety of shopping options. For groceries, Auburn has a Wegmans supermarket on Loop Road and a Tops Friendly Markets store on West Genesee Street.

Recreation & Entertainment

This is a town, again, centered on the lovely Skaneateles Lake. Boating, and especially sail boating, is popular here. People come here to picnic, to visit the lakeside parks, to fish, to shop the quaint village shops, to walk on the pier and watch the action on the water or to watch the sunset. There are regular boat excursions on the 16-mile lake. The Skaneateles Festival is held in summer and features music; also in the summer is the Skaneateles Antique and Classic Boat Show.

Transportation & Traffic

The main highway here is Route 20 (Genesee Street), which heads east-west. Skaneateles is the northern terminus of Route 41 and the southern terminus of Route 321.

Pros & Cons

Simply put, Skaneateles is a spectacular, scenic community built around the lake. This community has long been popular with tourists. The village has lots of history and chic businesses. The city of Auburn is just 7 miles west and has all the amenities you’ll need. The larger city of Syracuse is only 22 miles east.
