Welcome to Salina, NY

Overview

Salina is a town of roughly 34,000 residents in central Onondaga County, directly north of Syracuse. The town is bordered to the north by Clay and Cicero, to the east by Manlius, to the south by Syracuse and Dewitt and to the west by Onondaga Lake (and beyond that, Geddes). The name of the town of Salina derives from the Latin word for “salt,” and the salt-mining industry has been big here for a long time.

Essentials

Salina and particularly Liverpool are bustling areas with plenty of shopping options. For grocery shopping, Liverpool has three Wegmans supermarkets (on West Taft Road, Oswego Road and Route 31). Top’s Friendly Markets has stores in the neighboring communities of North Syracuse, Dewitt and Clay, as well as five stores in Syracuse. For retail shopping, part of the enormous DestinyUSA complex is in Salina. Liverpool has a Target store and a Walmart on Highway 31, where you’ll also find a Barnes and Noble bookstore and a Bed, Bath & Beyond store (among others).

Recreation & Entertainment

Onondaga Lake County Park (and the lake itself) is a big attraction here. The Hollywood Theatre, a movie house, is in the hamlet of Mattydale. Salina has popular museums like the Salt Museum and Sainte Marie among the Iroquois.

Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway, heading east-west, runs through Salina and intersects with the well-traveled Interstate 81 in town. Route 370 borders Onondaga Lake. Route 11 passes through the eastern part of Salina.

Pros & Cons

You’re on the shoreline of Onondaga Lake in Salina, and the county park is a big draw. The Erie Canal also runs through town. Salina is just outside of busy Syracuse, and the town has a number of places to eat and shop. The town’s village and hamlets all have their own identities and attractions.
